Bill Tiller, lead background artist on The Curse of Monkey Island, tweeted this on July 17th:

“No CMI SE for me. Not sure there will even be one. Bummed.”

Apparently, Bill knows that LucasArts is not interested in making a Special Edition for Monkey Island 3 and, honestly, who can blame them? The graphics are holding out fine, the voice acting is top notch and the game really doesn’t seem to need a face-lift. Sure, you still need ScummVM to play it, sure it doesn’t support 16:9 monitors… but it’s still okay.

Pure speculation: wouldn’t it be cool if someone could convince the heads of LA to concentrate their efforts into making a NEW Monkey Island game? What do you think? Post a comment, don’t be shy!

LucasArts are currently offering a great deal: if you pre-order the Monkey Island 2 special edition from Steam, you’ll get the special edition of The Secret of Monkey Island free, so you can give it away to a friend who hasn’t been able to experience the joys of Monkey Island yet! Or you could just keep it yourself, but you wouldn’t do that, now would you? No, of course not.

It would seem that Darrell Rodriguez’ career at LucasArts is short-lived, seeing how he has announced his resignation, according to several online reports, like this one from Kotaku. Under Rodriguez’ tenure, LucasArts have returned to their roots a bit, with the release of special editions for the first two Monkey Island games, and outsourcing a whole new Monkey Island series to Telltale. We can only hope that this regime change will not bode ill for old-school adventure fans.

In an alternate universe, there are billions of gamers slaving away at their computers, which all have a mysterious apple engraved on it. In our own universe, there are not nearly as many Mac gamers, but it’s still a hefty number.

As evidenced by the Apple Games site, they can also play Monkey Island games on their Apple computers, and since The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition has recently been added to the plethora of Mac games already out there, Apple decided to celebrate it with this article. Of special note is the last section, ‘Of Doom and Rubber Chickens’, in which such quality web sites as The World of Monkey Island, the Monkey Island Wiki, and this blog are mentioned.

That alone merits a read of the article. And if you are in possession of a Mac that is equipped with an Intel processor, you owe it to yourself to get this game from Aspyr (as well as Tales of Monkey Island for the Mac).

If you’ve been debating whether you should get The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, Direct2Drive might have just the deal for you. Now you can get it for half the normal price, if you buy it in a bundle with several other classic LucasArts games.

There’s the “There’s Action, Adventure & Puzzles” bundle, which includes Lucidity and some classic point & click games, on sale for $ 24.95. If you want even more games, maybe you’re interested in the LucasArts Premier Pack, which has additional classics, such as Knights of the Old Republic, for $ 39.95. One thing though: these offers are only valid in the United States and Canada.

…because that computer game is most likely incomplete. As demonstrated by Adam Bormann, one of the designers on The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, there are some lines in the original SCUMM code of the game that didn’t show up in the final product. For an overview of the deleted and extended scenes, check out the LucasArts Workshop blog. The Secret™ isn’t revealed, but it’s an interesting peek behind the scenes nonetheless.

The generosity doesn’t stop here, as you can get The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition at half-price on Steam and Direct2Drive this weekend. Looks like everybody wants to spread the pirate-mania around the world. Have you started feeling more piratey all of a sudden?
