Polly: What is the secret?

August 29th, 2011 by | 10 comments

Originally, I assumed the secret in ‘The Secret of Monkey Island‘ was simply the location of Monkey Island. It wasn’t until I got on the Internet in 97 I read all kinds of theories and I realized that most people think the secret is something else like the catacombs beneath Monkey Island and a lot of people think that the secret is that it all takes place in an amusement park.

This is something Ron Gilbert has often hinted at and it is supported by the grog machine in the first two games, the underground tunnels, and occasional dialog like the sword fighting pirates on Mêlée Island saying something like ‘Play along Guybrush, that’s how they talked back then‘. I believe this too, but I still think the secret the title of the original game refers to is the location of Monkey Island. This isn’t about what I believe though, what do you think the secret is?

Polly: What is the secret?

  • The catacombs beneath Monkey Island (5%, 3 Votes)
  • Big Whoop (23%, 13 Votes)
  • The giant monkey robot (5%, 3 Votes)

Weekly Wiki: The spitting Contest

August 23rd, 2011 by | No comments

When there are no new costumes to try on in the costume shop and no one needs a coffin the people of Booty Island like to participate in a spitting contest. The Spitmaster presides over the contest and the grand prize is a charming spit-marked plaque. Guybrush wants this and cheats to achieve the winning spit of course. If you’re good at hawking up a good and creamie loogi then you should stop by the spitting contest on Booty Island.

Polly: Which dark island would you call home?

August 8th, 2011 by | 2 comments

There are a few islands in the Monkey Island series with inhabitants that seem to be shrouded in eternal darkness. Those islands would be Mêlée Island, Scabb Island, and Blood Island. Which of these islands would you prefer to live on if you had to choose one? Skull Island is not included as there is hardly anywhere to live except for the cave.

Polly: Which dark island would you call home?

  • Mêlée Island (47%, 30 Votes)
  • Scabb Island (23%, 15 Votes)
  • Blood Island (30%, 19 Votes)

Horizons: Big Brain Wolf

August 6th, 2011 by | No comments

I love puzzles so after completing Puzzle Agent 2 in a few hours I found the game Big Brain Wolf on Steam and bought it to work as a fix to my endless hunger for puzzles. I’m going to be comparing it to Puzzle Agent 2 as a frame of reference. The story in Big Brain Wolf is stupid and one you probably won’t find yourself caring much about, but the puzzles are superb.

Weekly Wiki: Three Sheets to the Wind

August 2nd, 2011 by | No comments

The following text is directly copied and pasted from the Monkey Island Wiki. Not because I’m lazy (well, I am, but that’s still now why), but because I can’t rewrite it to sound any better.

Three Sheets to the Wind is a book of poetry, written by various pirates. Upon reading it, Guybrush says it is some of the worst poetry he has ever read. The book is available from the Phatt City Library in Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge but has been checked out by Governor Phatt; it rests atop his big belly and Guybrush must replace it with another book in an Indiana-Jones-style switch to keep from awakening the governor when he takes it. The book is necessary for identifying the coffin of Rapp Scallion, as the coffins in Stan‘s Cozy Crypt in the Scabb Island Cemetery are marked only by a famous quotation of the deceased.

Three Sheets to the Wind is also the title of Part III in The Curse of Monkey Island, in which Guybrush must participate in Insult Swordfighting at sea. The phrase “three sheets to the wind” refers to someone who is intoxicated, comparing the drunk to a ship whose sailing sheets have come loose.

Polly: MI with a hint of DOTT

July 25th, 2011 by | 2 comments

Hello fellow squawkers! I was thinking of ways to shake up the next Monkey Island game a bit and I thought it might be fun if you played different characters like in Day of the Tentacle and they had to work together to solve a puzzle. You could switch between them at any time and they could somehow send inventory items to each other even though they were on different islands or something. Let’s say it was Guybrush, Elaine, and… Wally? What do you think? Would it work? Would it be fun?

Polly: MI with multiple characters like DOTT?

  • Yes, that's a great idea! (28%, 17 Votes)
  • No, that's a horrible idea! (31%, 19 Votes)
  • Maybe, I'm not sure. Yes! No! I can't decide! (26%, 16 Votes)
  • I don't care, I just want another MI game! (15%, 9 Votes)
