Horizons: Lego

October 22nd, 2011 by | No comments

You probably know the Lego video games, such as Lego: Pirates of the Caribbean. But before there were computer games, Lego already existed as little plastic bricks. It’s hard to imagine such a prehistory, but perhaps you yourself have played with them, and maybe you still do? Ah, the stories you can enact with the little yellow figures… someone has even recreated Mêlée Island with Lego bricks! How about you? Did you ever play with Lego? Maybe you made something Monkey Island related with Lego that you want to share? If so, do leave a comment, we’d love to hear your story!

Horizons: Psychonauts

October 1st, 2011 by | No comments

If you’re one of the few people who have still not purchased Psychonauts, now’s a good time to right your wrongs. The Steam version of the game has received a bit of an overhaul, adding achievements and decreasing the difficulty of a particularly hard level (that I didn’t get to on my first playthrough, which reminds me I really need to play that game again). To be fair, the reason I didn’t finish it was because keyboard controls are just a bit too clunky for a platformer, so it’s nice that they also added support for an Xbox 360 controller in the update!

We’ve all been there. A chafing stump, an eye-patch rash, it can happen to the best of pirates. It’s a good thing then, that there’s such a thing as Tender-touch Pirate Powder! This voodoo powder, which you can procure from The International House of Mojo, will alleviate the aforementioned problems, and probably others as well. So get your powder now!

Horizons: Sheeped Away

September 11th, 2011 by | 1 lonely comment

Long-time fans of this site and The World of Monkey Island before it will surely remember Junaid Chundrigar, who, apart from being a Monkey Island fan, is also a gifted artist… and animator. To officially earn this last title in animation school, Junaid made a short film entitled Sheeped Away, which is about a farmer who suddenly finds his sheep being sucked up by a UFO. Do give it a view if you haven’t already seen it, and/or visit the official Sheeped Away site!

Weekly Wiki: Speare: A Theatrical Medley

September 7th, 2011 by | No comments

Are you in the mood for some culture, but you don’t want to watch boring, seemingly never-ending Shakespeare plays? Then you need to head over to the Long John Silver Center for the Performing Arts right now. There you can see brilliant actor Slappy Cromwell perform his 45-minute masterpiece Speare: A Theatrical Medley. Highly recommended if you like juggling shows.

Weekly Wiki: Rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle

August 16th, 2011 by | No comments

One of the weirdest items in the Monkey Island universe is also one of the most well known: the rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle. Originally found in The Secret of Monkey Island, it’s unclear what its exact purpose is at first, even though it has an entire shop dedicated to selling this peculiar product. Later in the game it is revealed it does serve a purpose, however. And perhaps its biggest contribution is that it’s become ingrained into our collective conscience, earning references in other games and even becoming a universal symbol of the joys of Monkey Island games.

Review: Puzzle Agent 2

August 5th, 2011 by | 1 lonely comment

Since the pilot episode of Puzzle Agent, we’ve had to wait quite a while for the sequel. The first part was promising enough though, so it’s a good thing we finally got a part two! Does it live up to its expectations? Is it an improvement over its predecessor, or is it a step back? Read on to see what I thought of it! Read the rest of this entry »

Something of the Thread: Statistics

July 31st, 2011 by | 1 lonely comment

Since there isn’t all that much forum activity at the moment (possibly because of the summer), I figured I’d do things a little differently this time and post some statistics instead. At the time of writing this post, the forums contain 66,903 posts in 5,715 topics. There are 4,191 users registered (although only a handful regularly post). On average, every day 18.09 new posts are made, and 1.55 new topics are created daily. Also, every day 1.13 new users sign up. The .13 is probably someone with only a head, like Murray. There, now you can impress your friends with these statistics! Or perhaps not, but it’s still pretty cool.

Horizons: Pirates, Vikings and Knights II

July 30th, 2011 by | No comments

If you’re looking for a game like Team Fortress 2 that’s also based on Valve’s Source engine (like Garry’s Mod), but you find that to be lacking in the pirate department, here’s something you’re sure to enjoy: Pirates, Vikings and Knights II. The game is a lot like TF2 in that you play against others online (or on a local network), but this time you’re not using guns. Well, one or two, but only if you’re playing as a pirate. As a Monkey Island fan, you’ll probably want to do so, in which case you have several other weapons at your disposal, including a homicidal homing parrot. The other two classes, Vikings and Knights, are fun to play as well, and word is that all of them are getting a few extra characters to play with soon. Best of all, it’s free to play on Steam!
