Review: Hector: Badge of Carnage – Episode 2

September 14th, 2011 by | No comments

In Hector: Badge of Carnage – Episode 2: Senseless Acts of Justice we return to Clappers Wreake to help guide our anti-hero to success in finding the terrorist. The game picks up exactly where the first episode ended which had Hector attempting to eat a slice of pizza while having a gun pointed at him. The first few minutes of the episode acts as a tutorial, but ends quickly when Hector shouts at the helpful text to go away. This is followed by a segment where you play both as Hector and his not-so-bright assistant, Lambert. You can switch between the characters and they can send items to each other as they attempt together to solve a larger puzzle.

Review: Puzzle Agent 2

August 5th, 2011 by | 1 lonely comment

Since the pilot episode of Puzzle Agent, we’ve had to wait quite a while for the sequel. The first part was promising enough though, so it’s a good thing we finally got a part two! Does it live up to its expectations? Is it an improvement over its predecessor, or is it a step back? Read on to see what I thought of it! Read the rest of this entry »

Review: Back to the Future: Outatime

July 13th, 2011 by | 3 comments

It took a while for this review to see the light of day mainly because I wasn’t sure regarding ways to approach the subject.

The Final episode of Back to the Future: The Game has been launched almost a month ago. I can remember awesome things like Edna’s behavior (trying not to spoil anything, of course) or the brilliant nostalgic feeling you get when you hear Michael J. Fox’s voice again. I can also remember the disappointments I had… and my expectancies were actually very very low this time.

Either way, let’s dig right into Outatime!

Review: Back to the Future: Double Visions

May 4th, 2011 by | 5 comments

I think a good reviewer should be well informed and should have no emotional attachment (positive or negative) to the product or the people he is reviewing. I don’t know if I am a good reviewer but I do know that it hurts to say this: Episode 4 was not worth the wait.

I know what it means to work your butt off on a project, I know what it means to work with several leaders, each with his own decisions to make which undoubtedly will conflict with yours, I know what it means to take on multiple projects at the same time… fortunately I also know when to stop and focus on just one. To have a basis for this review, these words will not be repeated twice: the Telltale Games Team is a group of brilliant people which are admired and respected by many fans around the world. That being said, I have just played the worst episode yet.

Feel free to jump into the discussion and prove me wrong. I always admire a good debate! Here are my arguments/points… with a tint of spoilers. (nothing major, you’re safe) 🙂

Review: Hector: Badge of Carnage – Episode 1

April 28th, 2011 by | No comments

Hector: Badge of Carnage – Episode 1 – We Negotiate with Terrorists was originally released by Straandlooper in June 2010 for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Since then Straandlooper teamed up with Telltale to re-release the episode for pc, mac, and iPad and create and release the last two episodes in the planned trilogy. The last two episodes are coming in the fall, but until then we have ‘We Negotiate with Terrorists’ to play so let’s take a look at it.

Review: Back to the Future: Citizen Brown

March 31st, 2011 by | 5 comments

(No Spoilers! Feel free to read, it’s safe)

After “BTTF – Episode 3: Citizen Brown” ends, one may feel the need to close his eyes, look up and say: Yes! Finally! They’re back on track!

At least that’s what I did…

We have reached the middle of the season and I was genuinely getting worried that I bought a series meant for children. One is able to understand Telltale Games’ approach in this case: big old franchise, let’s not mess it up for new players. Still, this didn’t explain the “Pause/Play Movies” from the previous episodes. Yes, that’s what I am calling them now… “Pause/Play Movies”. The game Pauses at one point, and you need to click on a button to get it going again, like an old VCR-player that keeps jamming.

Thankfully, Episode 3 is not like that…at least, not as much.

Review: Back to the Future: Get Tannen!

February 18th, 2011 by | No comments

Episode 2 of the Back to the Future game has been released suddenly and it’s entitled ‘Get Tannen!’. The biggest complaint I had in my review of episode 1 was that it was too short and too easy, so I was interested to see if episode 2 would be better in these areas. Unfortunately, it isn’t. If anything, it’s actually worse. The episode feels shorter than the previous one and it’s also easier. I played through it in one sitting of around two hours. which is very quick when fans have been waiting two months for this episode. The first 30-45 minutes is one long cutscene where you occasionatly select a dialog option or click a few things, but it ultimately feels like you’re watching an animated movie instead of playing an adventure game. I love cutscenes, but this is too much.

Review: Back to the Future: It’s About Time

December 30th, 2010 by | 8 comments

Welcome to the first non-Monkey Island review. After a heated staff meeting in which things flew, Haggis reportedly slapped someone, and SilverWolfPet will neither confirm nor deny that he cried in the bathroom afterwards, we decided to start reviewing other adventure games. This will probably be exclusively Telltale games, but a few other games might pop up once in a while. I had a chicken and bacon sandwich at the meeting by the way. It was delicious. On to the review!

Review: Rise of the Pirate God

When I first heard that the next Monkey Island game would be released in five segments approximately a month apart I was a bit skeptic. I liked the idea of a huge Monkey Island game at once and I feared the overall game would suffer in story, puzzles, and atmosphere by being divided in chunks.

To my delight my fears were quickly put to shame. The game is nothing short of what a Monkey Island fan could want and the story feels fresh and takes the game in a new direction and the fact that we get a new chapter each month makes the excitement last much longer.

However, where the first four chapters kept getting better and better, this one takes a step backwards and doesn’t quite live up to the high standards set by the previous installments.

Review: The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood

October 30th, 2009 by | 15 comments

review4_header

That title alone is a bit intimidating. It sounds like it might be a title of a book written by some famous 19th-century Russian novelist, about the grand things in life. Love, death, betrayal, character. And hey, actually, the title is well-chosen, because those are the ingredients of this roller coaster ride that is the 4th chapter of Tales of Monkey Island.
