Are you excited about the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film as well? If so, speak your mind in this thread about the movie that’s inspired by Tim Powers’ book On Stranger Tides, which inspired Monkey Island, which in turn shares quite a few themes with Pirates of the Caribbean… well, just watch the trailer, then you’ll understand. Also, Homestar Runner is back!
A movie based on the Monkey Island games was once very close to being reality. A script was in development and Steven Spielberg was going to produce. Spielberg had asked Ted Elliot to help with the story. Unfortunatly, the MI movie never saw the light of day and a few years later Ted Elliot wrote ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’.
If you’ve seen the movie it’s not hard to imagine that Elliot borrowed a few things from his Monkey Island script. All this is not officially confirmed by any parties of course, but many details have surfaced over the years. An interesting fact is also that the fourth PotC movie, which is currently filming, is based on the book ‘On Stranger Tides’ from which Ron Gilbert also drew inspiration for the original Monkey Island games.
Check out the article for the Monkey Island movie and let’s hope we’ll see it one day.
The title of the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, slated for release in the summer of 2010, has been revealed: On Stranger Tides. Wait a minute, wait a minute! Where have we heard that before? Here. It’s also the title of a book by Tim Powers, cited by Ron Gilbert as an inspiration for Monkey Island. What could this all mean? Is the next Pirates film going to be based on the book? Will we see even more similarities with Monkey Island? Could it be that Disney now want a taste of the current Monkey Island success? Maybe not, but this is sure something to keep an eye on.
