It really does belong in a museum!

Video games are getting the recognition they deserve, with an exhibition at the Smithsonian. Among the five playable games is… The Secret of Monkey Island. Yes, it’s that good. In addition, you can vote for other games you’d want to be included – among the possible choices is Grim Fandango, another masterpiece from the days when LucasArts were busier with the second half of their name than with the first.

Tales of Monkey Island 2 – Not so soon

February 18th, 2011 by | 3 comments

Relax, this is still just speculation… but (and there’s a big BUT here), based on recent announcements, the second season of Tales of Monkey Island may not be just around the corner.

TellTale just announced that they will be working on two new game series. The TellTale staff will make a brand new season based on the comic-book series Fables, and they just signed an exclusive worldwide agreement to develop and publish videogames based on the AMC cable network’s zombie hit “The Walking Dead.”

Moreover, the new Jurassic Park trailer states that, after Back to the Future, the immediate focus will shift towards dinosaurs in April 2011.

So you tell us… when would they have time for a new Monkey Island? TellTale still has three more announcements to make regarding the other 3 secret projects they are working on. What do you think? Will we see Guybrush again or not?

Top 5 Best Moments: Monkey Island

February 17th, 2011 by | 1 lonely comment

Lisa Foiles from ‘the escapist‘ has a video of her top 5 moments in Monkey Island 1 & 2. I can’t say I agree with all of her choices, but the video is pretty funny and it’s an entertaining watch. I am especially interested in Joel’s take on insult sword fighting.

Apparently, this list is going to feature in the 2011 edition of the book. Who knew there was a Gamer’s Edition of Guinness Book of World Records? Well, I didn’t, until now 🙂

Weekly Wiki: Phatt Island waterfall

February 15th, 2011 by | No comments

Some days you just want a little light reading and today, my dear readers, is one of those days. Therefore we take a look at the Phatt Island waterfall falling majestically on Phatt Island. The waterfall can conveniently be turned off with a magnificent and stunning pump located at the top of the beautiful waterfall. It’s an old pump and you might need to jiggle the handle a bit to get it working. Shutting off the waterfall will reveal an enticing entrance to a cousy tunnel leading to a sturdy and wonderful cottage that Rum Rogers built. It’s an enchanting and delightful waterfall and you should start MI2 and go and gaze at the wonder that is this fall of water.

(The image is technically not of the Phatt Island waterfall, but it’s nearly impossible to tell the difference.)

Secret of Monkey Island:SE on iTunes Store

February 14th, 2011 by | No comments

Awkwardly, we did not announce this last week. So…here it is:

Aspyr announced last week that The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition is now available in Apple’s Mac App Store. The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition is Aspyr’s third Mac App Store release, with more to come.

I hope this makes some people happy. Slow news… and according to Mixnmojo, Dominic Armato has been a bit late with the weekly columns on his blog. Could he be recording for TellTale’s ToMI 2? Let’s speculate! …it’s the least we can do.

Something of the Thread: Blast from the past

February 13th, 2011 by | 2 comments

Question-asker extraordinaire HaydenWCE is back with two new threads this week. He wants to know if you prefer your Monkey Island games episodic or full-length, and what you thought was the best cliffhanger in Tales of Monkey Island. And in a real blast from the past, this thread from 2004 saw the return of forum veterans piratebd and Natsicle. Be sure to stick around!

Horizons: The Last Express

February 12th, 2011 by | 2 comments

The Last Express is a game you may have heard about, but haven’t got around to playing yet. Now that it’s only $ 5.99 on Good Old Games though, it might be a good time to get aboard. It came out in 1997, the same year Curse of Monkey Island was released, but it’s probably less well-known. Once you start playing it though, you’ll realize that this game isn’t bad – like Grim Fandango, it’s just a game that has unfortunately gone under some people’s radar. Because of the unique way in which it is played (it’s pretty much a real-time adventure), and the fantastic atmosphere of the game, I highly recommend it to any and all adventure game fans.
