Horizons: Grog (ingredients included)

March 19th, 2011 by | 3 comments

The word grog refers to a variety of alcoholic beverages. The word originally referred to a drink made with water or “small beer” (a weak beer) and rum, which was introduced into the Royal Navy by British Vice Admiral Edward Vernon on 21 August 1740. Vernon wore a coat of grogram cloth and was nicknamed “Old Grogham” or “Old Grog”. Modern versions of the drink are often made with hot or boiling water, and sometimes include lemon juice, lime juice, cinnamon or sugar to improve the taste. Rum with water, sugar and nutmeg was known as bumbo and was more popular with pirates and merchantmen.

By contrast, in Australia and New Zealand, the word has come to mean any alcoholic drink.

Weekly Wiki: Hook Island

March 15th, 2011 by | No comments

Hook Island is a small island of the northeast coast of Mêlée Island, and is the home of Meathook.

In The Secret of Monkey Island the island is only attached to Mêlée by a cable, which Guybrush can use as a zipwire using a rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle. Meathook lives alone on the island tending a smaller version of the monster that removed both his hands (a parrot).

After Meathook escapes from Monkey Island, he returns home and eventually has a bridge built connecting Hook and Mêlée Islands (to Guybrush’s disappointment). In Escape from Monkey Island, however, he will initially not let anyone in for fear of losing his property to Ozzie Mandrill. He has turned his home into Meathook’s House of Wax after discovering that he can paint with melted wax on his hooks, and has sold several works across the island.

In Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge it is possible to win a ticket for a trip to Hook Island in the alleys on Phatt Island, but it is a useless item.

Something of the Thread: Creative Monkey Island fans

March 13th, 2011 by | No comments

Monkey Island fans are perhaps the most creative ones in the world. Or at least, we like to think so. Further evidence of that is an awesome painting by new forum member rayraybrain. Hande has used his creativity to make a chart detailing all the SCUMM masters. And you can be creative too, by creating some discussion on Telltale’s Back to the Future series.
