Horizons: The Crimson Permanent Assurance

April 16th, 2011 by | 2 comments

This week’s Horizons comes from a tip by Harris McMahon. In his own words: “For those who do not know, this is a short film directed by Terry Gilliam that appeared before the film Monty Python and the Meaning of Life. (I didn’t like the film compared to other things by Monty Python, but the Crimson Permanent Assurance completely stole the show.) The film is about pirates, but not exactly the kind of pirates that you expect. Just watch it and you will understand!” It’s a great, funny comment on capitalism and corporate culture. I suggest you just watch it (I’ve combined the two videos into a single convenient playlist, which you can view below). Read the rest of this entry »

The return of the fan games

April 14th, 2011 by | 1 lonely comment

Remember this Horizons column about fan games? If you liked that, you’ll love this news. Giocherellone has undertaken the massive task of collecting, indexing, and archiving the LucasArts fan games known to mankind. The result can be found here at Mojo; it contains many Monkey Island fan games, and best of all, it has download links so you can actually play these games, some of which had been believed to be lost forever!

Monkey Island – RPG ?!

April 14th, 2011 by | 5 comments

Arrrrgh! I wanna be a pirate! …oh, you do too? Well, now we both can!

Okay, okay, so it’s not Monkey Island… but it’s got pirates, guns, swords AND Voodoo Dolls! The game is called Risen 2: Dark Waters. For those who don’t know what this is all about, here’s a quick definition of this genre:

A role-playing game (RPG) is a game in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting. In most modern RPGs, the player can complete quests in order to gain experience points which can be spent on upgrading the character’s stats (such as strength, dexterity, mana etc).

Now add pirates to the recipe and you’ve got yourself a Guybrush wannabe. Oh, what’s that? You’ll believe it when you see it? …fine by me! (take note, the trailer may be a bit violent).

Weekly Wiki: Tales of Monkey Island

April 12th, 2011 by | 4 comments

If you haven’t yet played Tales of Monkey Island and are stubbornly refusing to do so, read this article on the Monkey Island Wiki. Before you’ve reached the end, you’ll be crying like a baby, emptying your wallet and running to the Telltale store in order to buy it. Or, if not, you could try to get it for free. One possibility in that respect is to participate in this contest on Facebook. All you have to do is come up with a funny pirate grog recipe (Grog XD, anyone?) and live in Europe. The latter may be a bit hard for some of you to achieve, but what’s a plane ticket and emigration when you could win a copy of the Tales of Monkey Island Collector’s Edition?

Something of the Thread: What’s on your mind?

April 10th, 2011 by | No comments

After a week-long absence, Something of the Thread returns with a vengeance: HaydenWCE has created a thread that looks to become a sure hit: in the true spirit of the What’s on your mind? subforum, he encourages you to talk about whatever’s on your mind. Other interesting discussions are about April Fools Day and the eternal question that’s always on everybody’s mind: just how old is Guybrush?

Weekly Wiki: E ticket

April 5th, 2011 by | No comments

Yes, the E ticket is a mystery to us all. The E ticket appeared briefly during the end of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, However it played a very small role and was not necessary to complete the game. This was supposedly the treasure of Big Whoop. But was not seen or mentioned in any other game. On the ticket a picture of a castle can be seen, which looks suspiciously like the Disney logo, while Ron Gilbert was inspired by Disney, he has not mentioned the “E ticket”, so its importance is unknown.

What do you think it represents? If you can figure it out, we may add your find to the MiWiki. Help save the clocktower— I mean…help solve the mystery!

Horizons: Leisure Suit Larry 7 – Love for Sail!

April 4th, 2011 by | 5 comments

This edition of ‘Horizons’ is a few days late because I was abducted by aliens this weekend. When they were done probing me we had a drink and they were actually very nice guys. Anyway, on to the topic of the column which is the adventure game Leisure Suit Larry 7 – Love for Sail! This is one of my favorite adventure games and not for the reason you might think. Let us get it out of the way right away; Yes, the main objective of the game is to get the main character, Larry Laffer, laid and there is partial nudity in the game (and full nudity if you accomplish some hidden goals in the game), but if that is why you play the game then you will be sorely disappointed. All skin showing, sleazy dialog, and jokes are done in a very subtle and humorous way. That said, you shouldn’t give this game to your youngest children.

  • I will purchase the first episode and see if I like it (15%, 10 Votes)
  • I will wait until I get the chance to play a demo/free episode (41%, 27 Votes)
  • No, Jurassic Park doesn't interest me at all (14%, 9 Votes)
