Something of the Thread: Statistics

July 31st, 2011 by | 1 lonely comment

Since there isn’t all that much forum activity at the moment (possibly because of the summer), I figured I’d do things a little differently this time and post some statistics instead. At the time of writing this post, the forums contain 66,903 posts in 5,715 topics. There are 4,191 users registered (although only a handful regularly post). On average, every day 18.09 new posts are made, and 1.55 new topics are created daily. Also, every day 1.13 new users sign up. The .13 is probably someone with only a head, like Murray. There, now you can impress your friends with these statistics! Or perhaps not, but it’s still pretty cool.

Horizons: Pirates, Vikings and Knights II

July 30th, 2011 by | No comments

If you’re looking for a game like Team Fortress 2 that’s also based on Valve’s Source engine (like Garry’s Mod), but you find that to be lacking in the pirate department, here’s something you’re sure to enjoy: Pirates, Vikings and Knights II. The game is a lot like TF2 in that you play against others online (or on a local network), but this time you’re not using guns. Well, one or two, but only if you’re playing as a pirate. As a Monkey Island fan, you’ll probably want to do so, in which case you have several other weapons at your disposal, including a homicidal homing parrot. The other two classes, Vikings and Knights, are fun to play as well, and word is that all of them are getting a few extra characters to play with soon. Best of all, it’s free to play on Steam!

Weekly Wiki: Ozzie’s House

July 27th, 2011 by | 1 lonely comment

One of the highlights of Lucre Island architecture is the mansion inhabited by Ozzie Mandrill. From the outside, it just looks like any other Caribbean mansion, but once inside, the Australian influences become apparent. Ozzie has filled his home with artifacts from his home country, and he’s particularly proud of his collection of stuffed animals, which has exotic animals such as the platypus, the wombat, and the dingo. Be careful not to spray any of the animals with Eau de LeChuck though – Ozzie doesn’t like that.

Polly: MI with a hint of DOTT

July 25th, 2011 by | 2 comments

Hello fellow squawkers! I was thinking of ways to shake up the next Monkey Island game a bit and I thought it might be fun if you played different characters like in Day of the Tentacle and they had to work together to solve a puzzle. You could switch between them at any time and they could somehow send inventory items to each other even though they were on different islands or something. Let’s say it was Guybrush, Elaine, and… Wally? What do you think? Would it work? Would it be fun?

Polly: MI with multiple characters like DOTT?

  • Yes, that's a great idea! (28%, 17 Votes)
  • No, that's a horrible idea! (31%, 19 Votes)
  • Maybe, I'm not sure. Yes! No! I can't decide! (26%, 16 Votes)
  • I don't care, I just want another MI game! (15%, 9 Votes)

Horizons: Pirates captured a Romanian Ship Captain

July 24th, 2011 by | No comments

If I may…

If this was a movie plot, I would probably go see the movie! I’m not too fond of my people, but a Ship Captain which shares the same country origins with me? Sweet!

The situation, however, is not so sweet. Pirates seized an Italian tanker off Benin with a crew of 23 in the Gulf of Guinea Sunday, the Benin navy said. Navy commander Maxime Ahoyo told AFP that after receiving distress signals from the vessel, the navy sent two patrol boats in pursuit of the pirates.

“We are closely monitoring the situation”, he added.

Earlier, the Italian news agency ANSA first reported the capture of the Rbd Anema e Core and its crew comprising 20 Filipino seamen, two Italians and a Romanian captain.

It said three pirates managed to board the ship, which was carrying fuel, 23 nautical miles south of Cotonou, the economic capital of Benin.

I hope those people are okay. This is a bit ironic, really… I can finally brag about someone from my country, the Captain of that tanker… and he gets captured by pirates >.<

Jim McDow is a deceased daredevil pirate who was known for taking every risk he could and had several prosthetic appendages because of it. According to his epitaph on Scabb Island he eventually ran out of limbs. He is buried in the Scabb Island Cemetery.

He is one of the unseen characters from the Monkey Island Saga.

There comes a time in every franchise where the romantic couple starts having children. Would you like to see Guybrush & Elaine having a little Guybrush or little Elaine running around?

Should Guybrush & Elaine have a child?

  • Yes, that would be so adorable! (26%, 18 Votes)
  • Maybe, if the child didn't feature prominently in the game. (33%, 23 Votes)
  • No, nope, no way! (41%, 28 Votes)

Something of the Thread: Something to watch

July 17th, 2011 by | 1 lonely comment

In today’s ‘SotT’, HaydenWCE points us to a cool video that has Tim Schafer pitching his new game to Cookie Monster (which you may have already seen, but it’s still hilarious). You can also watch a work-in-progress video on the current state of TheGreatBooster‘s Monkey Island radio drama. And finally, the repackaged special editions of the first two Monkey Island games are something to watch out for. Are you looking forward to this enticing package like the Man of Low Moral Fibre is?

Horizons: Mermen

July 16th, 2011 by | No comments

Last month we had an article on mermaids and to keep things equal and not being accused of being sexist we are going to take a look at mermen today. They are not that different from their female counterparts; They are also overgrown fish with a human upper body – in this case a man’s obviously.  There are many different myth about mermen depending on where you are in the world. In Greek mythology they have a beard, seaweed hair and a trident. In Irish mythology they are extremely ugly creatures with green teeth, pig-like eyes, green hair and a red nose. Elsewhere they are known to be handsome and magical creatures that can cure illnesses, lift curses and brew potions. Sounds like a splendid fellow to have around.
