Review: Back to the Future: Outatime

July 13th, 2011 by | 3 comments

It took a while for this review to see the light of day mainly because I wasn’t sure regarding ways to approach the subject.

The Final episode of Back to the Future: The Game has been launched almost a month ago. I can remember awesome things like Edna’s behavior (trying not to spoil anything, of course) or the brilliant nostalgic feeling you get when you hear Michael J. Fox’s voice again. I can also remember the disappointments I had… and my expectancies were actually very very low this time.

Either way, let’s dig right into Outatime!

Weekly Wiki: Mobey Dick

July 13th, 2011 by | No comments

If you ever visit Blood Island and are invited to tea at Mort’s house you can see his poster of the book Mobey Dick. Guybrush doesn’t think much of it and describes it as a “really trashy horror novel. Trust me. It’ll never sell.

It is, of course, a parody of Moby-Dick, a classic piece of American literature about a sailor obsessively trying to kill a white whale who took his leg. It was written by Herman Melville in 1851.

Polly: What polls do you like?

July 11th, 2011 by | 2 comments

In the spirit of maintaining the awesomeness of the Polly feature I would like to know what kind of polls you like. For this purpose we’re having our first multi-choice poll! (Imagine balloons falling from the ceiling, glitter everywhere and an applause that won’t stop.) These are your options, should you choose to accept them:

Monkey Island polls – Which bar in the games do you prefer, favorite voice actor etc.
Opinion polls – Which game should get an SE, who should make the next MI etc.
Telltale polls – Will you buy an upcoming game, what did you think of this game etc.
Fight polls – Two similar characters are fighting each other. Who will win?
Misc. polls – Polls about other games, movies, books etc. that doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with Monkey Island.
Other – Please specify in the comments.
I don’t like polls – I felt I had to include this option, but of course I don’t except anyone to choose this option, right?

Polly: What polls do you like?

  • Monkey Island polls (82%, 32 Votes)
  • Opinion polls (49%, 19 Votes)
  • Telltale polls (38%, 15 Votes)
  • Fight polls (36%, 14 Votes)
  • Misc. polls (21%, 8 Votes)
  • Other (8%, 3 Votes)
  • I don't like polls and I don't participate in them. Wait...by choosing this option I am participating in a poll even though I don't like polls. You tricked me! (5%, 2 Votes)

Horizons: Garry’s Mod

July 10th, 2011 by | 2 comments

If you find we’ve been a bit lax with updates as of late, it’s likely because we here at the blog have discovered Garry’s Mod. It’s a sandbox game in which you can build things, but more importantly, you can shoot each other in multiplayer (or do other fun things, but mostly shoot each other). The only thing you need for it to work is a game using the Source engine, such as Team Fortress 2, another fun game that is now free on Steam. Then purchase a copy of Garry’s Mod and you’re ready to waste many hours of your life! Do you play Garry’s Mod? Any maps you want to recommend to your fellow Monkey Island fans? Perhaps you’re even working on a Monkey Island mod? Do let us know!

July 8th, 2011 by | 1 lonely comment

CVG announced this and we’re passing on the cool news!

As you no doubt probably guessed, it’s a collection of all the Monkey Island HD Special Editions to date.

That includes Special Editions for The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s revenge. The collection will also feature never-before-seen bonus content from the LucasArts vault.

Included in the bonus content is environment and character concept art, remastered and re-recorded soundtracks for both games, plus storyboards and concept art from an Industrial Light & Magic exploration of a Monkey Island animated movie that was never released.

The Monkey Island Special Edition Collection will release on September 9 for PS3, 360 and PC in Europe.

Weekly Wiki: The Lost Welshman

July 5th, 2011 by | No comments

From eating a sandwich to cracking Myst and Star Wars related jokes, the Lost Welshman displays time and again he is quite a character. More than just peddling unsuspecting commuters between Blood and Skull Island, he’s part of the landscape, perhaps a reason for tourists to visit Blood Island in the first place. Unfortunately for them, the Lost Welshman no longer works there, but if you’re lucky, you may just be served a dish cooked up by him at The Bloody Lip, although nobody really knows if he actually works there or not.

Who of these outstanding characters would win in a fight? Effete LaFoot or Joaquin Jocinto De Meara Alphonso D’Oro? Who would kick the other one on the shins? Who would brag about their height? Who would fart in the other’s general direction? Come on, you know you have an opinion on this.

  • Effete LaFoot (53%, 20 Votes)
  • Joaquin Jocinto De Meara Alphonso D'Oro (47%, 18 Votes)

Something of the Thread: Floppies

July 3rd, 2011 by | No comments

Ewan JF has a question for all of you, and a definitive answer has not been given yet: How many floppies does The Secret of Monkey Island have? If any of you know the answer (no, this is not a quiz), please make your way to the forums and help out a fellow Monkey Island fan!

Horizons: Prosthetics

July 2nd, 2011 by | 1 lonely comment

Here’s a weird question for ya scurvy dogs: Have you ever thought about loosing a limb?

Sinister, maybe… dark, a bit… but if it does happen one day, what are you going to do about it? Sure, it is unfortunate but, with all due respect towards those who already deal with this situation, there’s no reason why you can’t make something cool out of it!

Would you like a hook? Or a pegleg? Did you know they (still) come in various shapes and sizes?

First things first, wikipedia is on a roll:

A pegleg is a prosthesis, more specifically an artificial limb of carved wood fitted to the remaining stump of a human leg, as often seen in pirate movies. Wooden peg legs have been replaced by more modern materials, though some sports prostheses do have the same form.

Peg Leg Sam (Arthur Jackson) (1911–1977) American blues musician was one of the few famous land lubbers that had such a thing! Even to this day you can see brave people wearing a pegleg (in various designs) or a real hook!

Here are some “reviews” by people who know about these solutions or who live with them:

I know a person with a prosthetic hook, which is operated by a cable connected to a brace around her shoulders to operate the mechanism. She helped my wife and I pack, and, by God, she had no trouble wrapping things in paper, closing boxes, using the tape dispenser to seal things closed, etc.

Granted, she does have on functional human hand on the other arm, but most of what she did required the use of both and it didn’t slow her down in the least. Practice and skill in using a single, multi-function hook is a greater boon than having a bunch of attachments each of which requires its own skill to operate. In fact, from what I understand, the “fake hand” prosthetics are either non-functioning, or masks a hook underneath — prosthetic hooks are quite common. – Azrael Brown
I do recall hearing about a one-armed chef who had a custom-made set of knives that attached to his prosthesis. – Faint of Butt

Ever heard of a prosthetic fishing rod? Find out more here.
