Horizons: Mermaids

After seeing Pirates of the Caribbean – On Stranger Tides I thought it would be interesting to take a closer look a mermaids. I don’t mean that in a pornographic way, but where the myth of them originated from, because it is a myth. They don’t exist, do they? Anyway, we’ll dig into that as well. Mermaids are those big fish with a woman’s upper body instead of that of a fish. They live in the sea (duh!) and the most popular myth is that they lure sailors close by singing a beautiful song. When the poor sailors, who are enchanted by the song,  gets close the mermaids drag them underwater to drown. What they get out of that is beyond me. Maybe they have a weird fetish and just do it for pleasure, but there are also other stories.

Horizons: Pirates and SciFi

May 1st, 2011 by | 1 lonely comment

This week’s Horizons may be a bit weird. I must confess, I became a big Doctor Who fan (thanks to Majus)…

Doctor Who is a British science fiction television programme produced by the BBC. The programme depicts the adventures of a mysterious and eccentric timelord known as the Doctor who travels through time and space in his time machine, the TARDIS (an acronym for Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space), which normally appears from the exterior to be a blue 1950s British police box. With his companions, he explores time and space, faces a variety of foes and saves civilizations, helping people and righting wrongs.

Having that in mind, next week’s episode of Doctor Who will feature Pirates! Not the usual SciFi Pirates aka Space Corsairs or…whatever… but actual 1700s buccaneers faced with future technology.

You can check out the trailer for the pirates episode here. It doesn’t feature spoilers, in case you’re a fan of the show.
