Horizons: Stalking Ron Gilbert

October 10th, 2011 by | No comments

No, I’m not talking about camping out in his yard or hiding all night in the bushes with a thermos filled with hot soup hoping to catch an elusive glimpse of Ron Gilbert only to find yourself disappointed after an uneventful 12 hours followed by a desperate rummage through his trash salvaging only half of a used q-tip and a discarded slice of pizza that hopefully hides some precious saliva but otherwise has lost all taste and is no longer the feast of flavors it once was.

No, I’m talking about following Ron Gilbert on various modern (and hip) social medias. That includes his Twitter account and his Google+ profile where he posts about things such as a Monkey Island themed Monopoly game, hi-res backgrounds of old LucasArts adventure games, his current projects, and stuff around the Internet he finds interesting.

Polly: Are you feeling it?

September 19th, 2011 by | 1 lonely comment

I had problems coming up with a topic for this week’s poll, so I kept banging my head against the wall until an idea would materialize and amidst the tears and blood it appeared; Have you ever been emotional while playing a Monkey Island game? I don’t mean if you still get emotional the 10th time you play CMI, but if it ever happened during any of the games.

Polly: Have you ever been emotional while playing a Monkey Island game?

Polly: What is the secret?

August 29th, 2011 by | 10 comments

Originally, I assumed the secret in ‘The Secret of Monkey Island‘ was simply the location of Monkey Island. It wasn’t until I got on the Internet in 97 I read all kinds of theories and I realized that most people think the secret is something else like the catacombs beneath Monkey Island and a lot of people think that the secret is that it all takes place in an amusement park.

This is something Ron Gilbert has often hinted at and it is supported by the grog machine in the first two games, the underground tunnels, and occasional dialog like the sword fighting pirates on Mêlée Island saying something like ‘Play along Guybrush, that’s how they talked back then‘. I believe this too, but I still think the secret the title of the original game refers to is the location of Monkey Island. This isn’t about what I believe though, what do you think the secret is?

Polly: What is the secret?

Weekly Wiki: Rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle

August 16th, 2011 by | No comments

One of the weirdest items in the Monkey Island universe is also one of the most well known: the rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle. Originally found in The Secret of Monkey Island, it’s unclear what its exact purpose is at first, even though it has an entire shop dedicated to selling this peculiar product. Later in the game it is revealed it does serve a purpose, however. And perhaps its biggest contribution is that it’s become ingrained into our collective conscience, earning references in other games and even becoming a universal symbol of the joys of Monkey Island games.

Something of the Thread: Something to watch

July 17th, 2011 by | 1 lonely comment

In today’s ‘SotT’, HaydenWCE points us to a cool video that has Tim Schafer pitching his new game to Cookie Monster (which you may have already seen, but it’s still hilarious). You can also watch a work-in-progress video on the current state of TheGreatBooster‘s Monkey Island radio drama. And finally, the repackaged special editions of the first two Monkey Island games are something to watch out for. Are you looking forward to this enticing package like the Man of Low Moral Fibre is?

Horizons: ScummVM

June 25th, 2011 by | 1 lonely comment

ScummVM might very well be the best program ever developed in the history of anything. It’s a free program that allows you to run old adventures on newer computers, provided you have the original games of course. It started out as a project to enable old LucasArts adventures to be played on today’s machines, but it has since moved far beyond that and now supports a lot of other games – mostly adventures. That includes some of my favorite games like ‘The Legend of Kyrandia‘ series and ‘Simon the Sorcerer‘ 1+2.

“ScummVM supports many adventure games, including LucasArts SCUMM games (such as Monkey Island 1-3, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, …), many of Sierra’s AGI and SCI games (such as King’s Quest 1-6, Space Quest 1-5, …), Discworld 1 and 2, Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2, Beneath A Steel Sky, Lure of the Temptress, Broken Sword 1 and 2, Flight of the Amazon Queen, Gobliiins 1-3, The Legend of Kyrandia 1-3, many of Humongous Entertainment’s children’s SCUMM games (including Freddi Fish and Putt Putt games) and many more.”

The complete list is huge though and you can check it out here. So if you’re in the mood for a little nostalgia with an old game you haven’t played for years because you can’t get it to work ScummVM is your friend.

Something of the Thread: Best music

May 29th, 2011 by | No comments

HaydenWCE wants to know something (what else is new? :)). This time the question he asks is this: Which Monkey Island game has the best soundtrack? So go ahead and listen to them again to jog your memory, then speak your mind in the forums. Meanwhile, SilverWolfPet has an update on the fan letter to LucasArts, which now has 32 contributions.

Something of the Thread: Minecraft

May 15th, 2011 by | No comments

If you play Minecraft, be sure to visit this thread made by Brush guy – perhaps this is the start of a lively Monkey Island Minecraft community. I personally don’t play it, but if you do, you can perhaps convince people like me by writing about your fabulous experiences in the game! Also, HaydenWCE has another interesting question to ponder, in case you’re also wondering about what lurks in the shadows of the Monkey Island universe. Which inaccessible part in the Monkey Island universe would you want to unlock?

Something of the Thread: Puzzles and looking ahead

May 8th, 2011 by | No comments

To prove that our forum isn’t just about games now, HaydenWCE has made another thread inquiring about your opinion on puzzles – specifically, which Monkey Island game do you think has the best puzzles? Also from his hand is a thread asking what you’re looking forward to in the next year or so. It could be fun to participate in it and then in a year look back to see what has become of those expectations.
